about

Traditional Irish song with lyrics taken over by the Jacobites then later retrieved and codified by Padraig Pearse. The woman of the song returning as a liberator, Gráinne Mhaol (sometimes known as Grace O'Malley) was chieftain of the Ó Máille clan in the west of Ireland. She is a well-known historical figure in 16th-century Irish history, and is sometimes known as 'The Sea Queen of Connacht', one of the most famous female pirates of all time. lyrics

[Irish-Gaelic] Óró ‘Sé do bheatha ‘bhaile starts with one or two choruses, the chorus is called "curfá"

curfá:
Óró ‘Sé do bheatha ‘bhaile,
Óró ‘Sé do bheatha ‘bhaile,
Óró ‘Sé do bheatha ‘bhaile,
Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh!

‘Sé do bheatha a bhean ba léanmhar,
B’é ár gcreach tú bheith i ngéibhinn,
Do dhúiche bhreá i seilibh meirleach...
Is tú díolta leis na Gallaibh!

[curfá]

Tá Gráinne Mhaol ag teacht thar sáile,
Óglaigh armtha léi mar gharda,
Gaeil iad féin is ní Gaill ná Spáinnigh...
Is cuirfidh siad ruaig ar Ghallaibh!

[curfá]

A bhuí le Rí na bhFeart go bhfeiceann,
Muna mbíonn beo ina dhiaidh ach seachtain,
Gráinne Mhaol is míle gaiscíoch...
Ag fógairt fáin ar Ghallaibh!

[curfá]

Óró ‘Sé do bheatha ‘bhaile,
is fearr liom tu ná céad bo bainne
Óró ‘Sé do bheatha ‘bhaile,
thá tu maith le rátha!

[curfá]

Raised on science and science fiction in New York to a theatrical family, "Barbary Anne" has lived under sail with her husband and son, but is currently ashore. She loves many kinds of vocal music, but generally anything with great harmonies makes her happy. So sea shanties, Irish Traditional music, Renaissance festival fare, filk (SF-based) and folk are all fair game! ... more
